Flooring for school strength and conditioning centres

Schools are building strength and conditioning centres that would have been found only at professional clubs a decade ago. They're used by First XV and First XI squads, rowing crews, netballers, PE classes and staff, often all in the same week and sometimes the same day. The floor has to cope with all of it.

What makes a school floor different

  • Heavy daily use, all year. A school S&C room can see several sessions a day, every school day.
  • A wide range of users. Elite student athletes and Year 7 PE classes share the same room. The floor has to be safe for beginners and tough enough for heavy lifting.
  • Many sports. Rugby wants sleds and heavy lifting. Netball and basketball want agility and plyometrics. Rowing wants ergs. Every sport needs warm-up and mobility space.
  • Coach-led sessions. Large groups move through stations on a timer, so layout and zoning matter.

Floors that suit school programmes

Seamless rolled rubber across the main floor gives a durable, easy-to-clean surface with no tiles to lift or edges to catch. Inlaid lifting platforms at each rack give every group a defined station. A coach can run a whole squad through a session with everyone in their own space. See Drop zones and lifting platforms.

A turf track adds speed, sled and agility work, which almost every school sport needs. Commercial gym turf is hard-wearing and built for sled work. Distance markings help coaches run testing and drills. See Sports turf for sleds, sprints and functional training.

Open rubber floor handles warm-ups, plyometrics, med-ball work and PE classes.

School colours and crest

A crest in the turf and school colours through the floor make the space feel like it belongs to the school. It also looks strong in prospectuses, open days and social media. See Your logo in the floor.

Building credentials

Many school buildings are designed to Green Star or similar targets. The rubber flooring we specify carries GECA certification, an Environmental Product Declaration and Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze, and GECA-certified flooring contributes towards points under the Green Star materials calculator. We provide the documentation your architect needs.

Noise

S&C centres are often near classrooms, offices or performing arts spaces. If yours is, plan acoustic flooring in the drop zones from the start. See Stopping gym noise and vibration in apartments and hotels. The same principles apply.

The whole room, one team

Schools usually need more than the floor: racks, storage, lockers for bags, and change rooms. LUXGYM handles equipment, flooring, turf and Ojmar locker locks together, so the business manager deals with one team. See Designing a team strength and conditioning room.
