Designing a team strength and conditioning room

A team S&C room isn't a commercial gym. A commercial gym serves individuals arriving at random times. A team room has to handle a whole squad at once, run by one or two coaches, often in a tight time slot between classes or before training. The design should start with the session, not the equipment catalogue.

Start with the session plan

Before choosing any equipment, we ask the head of performance or the S&C coach:

  • How many athletes train at the same time?
  • How long is a typical session?
  • Do athletes rotate through stations, or work in groups at racks?
  • What does a week look like in season and in pre-season?
  • Which sports and age groups use the room?

Those answers set the number of racks, the platform count and how much open floor you need. In many team rooms, coaches run groups of three or four athletes per rack. One lifts, one spots, and the others prepare or do accessory work. Your coach's programme decides the ratio.

Line the racks up so the coach can see everyone

Coaches need sightlines. A row of racks facing the same way, with the coach able to stand where they can see every bar, makes cueing and safety much easier. Mirrors are often left off team rooms on purpose, so athletes focus on the coach and on how the lift feels.

Racks with built-in storage

Racks with plate storage, bar holders and attachments built in keep each station self-contained. Groups don't cross the room to collect plates, and the room resets quickly between sessions. Platforms inlaid into the floor at each rack give every group a dedicated lifting area.

Space to run, push and jump

Most team sports need speed, change of direction and power work alongside the lifting. A strip of sports turf for sled pushes, sprints and agility drills turns a weights room into a full performance space. Open rubber flooring handles plyometrics, med-ball throws and warm-ups. See Sports turf for sleds, sprints and functional training.

Branding

Team colours and club or school logos inlaid in the rubber or turf turn a training room into a place athletes are proud of. It also looks right in the photos that go on social media and in recruitment material. See Your logo in the floor.

Storage

Dumbbells, kettlebells, med balls, bands, boxes and mobility gear all need a home. Wall-mounted storage keeps the floor clear. Plan for it at the start, or it ends up stacked in corners.

Lockers and bags

A squad of thirty arriving at once brings thirty bags. Plan for them near the entry with lockers or open storage. Ojmar electronic locker locks suit clubs and schools where many people share lockers through the week. See Locker locks for schools, workplaces and clubs.

See it in action

We run team trials at our Cooroy showroom on the Sunshine Coast. Coaches can bring key athletes to train on the racks, flooring and turf before deciding what goes into their own facility. Book a team trial.
